Peacock History

Our Story

Peacock operates on land within the aboriginal territory of the suq̀wabš “People of Clear Salt Water” (Suquamish People) who live and protect the land and waters of their ancestors for future generations, and to whom we express our gratitude.

Peacock Family Services is a non-profit that was founded in 2009 by a group of active family services professionals including pediatricians, family counselors, mid-wives, parents, and professionals who saw a need on Bainbridge Island for something different.

Our original purpose was to create an early childhood center where programs provide the highest level of learning and care based on the latest in developmental research, and to offer a variety of care options to meet the needs of working families.

Together with our early childhood programs, our founders envisioned a space where family services and support exist under the same roof, providing a much needed family services hub for the greater community.

Our organization’s vision is that the children of North Kitsap County will reach their full potential, nurtured by families and caregivers who feel supported, informed, and connected. Pursuant to that vision, Peacock Family Services’ mission is to promote the healthy social and emotional development of children by providing nurturing and enriching care and family support. We currently embody these directives through three programmatic strands.

Our Early Childhood Development Center is licensed through the WA State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) to care for infants up to 5 year olds. From the youngest members of our community to those getting ready for kindergarten, Peacock’s experiential and inclusive curriculum is designed with all children in mind.

Also licensed through DCYF, our Nature Nuts program is growing, providing school-year and seasonal day camp experiences for children in grades K-3. In addition, Nature Nuts also provides Outdoor Families Nature Club once a week for adults and kids of all ages. This program is part play date, part family hike and is led by our naturalists.

Peacock’s Partners for Early Learning workshop series is a collaboration of community organizations, delivering workshops, panel discussions, and other educational opportunities throughout the calendar year.

Peacock also convenes the Alliance of Bainbridge Childcare Directors (ABCD), a group that gathers monthly to explore current issues and brainstorm solutions to common challenges in our field. With the goal to support positive pathways for our community’s families, Peacock is actively involved in family-focused efforts such as the Bainbridge Island Resource Directory (BIRD), the Child Safety & Family Reunification Committee of Bainbridge Prepares, and the Olympic-Kitsap Region of Washington Communities for Children, as well as the Help Me Grow Family & Community Outreach Action Team.

Peacock’s core values guide each of our programs, services, and networking opportunities in the community.

Our Core Values

Inclusiveness

Peacock believes that inclusiveness is essential to a diverse, engaged, and supported community of families. From our dedication to providing access through financial support for childcare, to recognizing that each child and family’s needs are unique and valued, we express our commitment to inclusiveness.

Health

Peacock believes that a healthy environment is essential for a healthy child. From our collaboration with parents in developing the whole child, to our investment in our staff’s development, our eco-friendly facility, as well as our nature-based programs that connect children to the natural world, we demonstrate our commitment to emotional and physical health.

Community

Peacock believes in the importance of providing a supportive community for our families. From our early childhood programs, to our family services, and community partnerships, we are committed to being the resource hub for families in the greater Bainbridge community.

SAFETY & COVID-19 POLICY

Peacock Family Services is committed to doing our part in maintaining the health and safety of our community during this time of COVID-19. Our measures are based on the guidelines of the CDC, Washington Department of Health (DOH), and Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).
